At Melissa's, we realize that one of our most important responsibilities is the preparation and distribution of safe, quality food. When faced with frightening new stories of food borne disease outbreaks, many consumers are left confused and uncertain as to the quality and safety of their food. At Melissa's, we are committed  with the highest degree of certainty  to ensuring our line of premium fresh product is safe. To achieve this goal, we are developing a certified HACCP-Based Food Safety Management Program as a means of protecting the consumer.

Stressing Prevention
Developed in the late 1960s for use in the U.S. space program, the origin of the HACCP system can be traced back to the beginning of manned space flights and has since been further enhanced by the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) identify critical control points concerning biological, chemical, and physical hazards and establish a means to prevent these hazards.

Raising The Bar
Moving beyond standards set by the USDA and FDA, Melissa's has established a comprehensive HACCP-Based Food Safety Management Program certified (as of July 18, 2000) by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS)  a leader in food safety efforts. While recognizing that reducing the risk of food borne illness to zero is impossible, this third-party certification (1) verifies safe and sanitary practices are being maintained and (2) ensures Melissa's products meet or exceed the highest level of food safety standards.

A Company Priority
For Melissa's, critical steps towards achieving certification included the designation of a Food Safety Management Team and the development of a Food Safety Management Program. Comprised of individuals with different specialties and various levels of management, Melissa's Food Safety Management Team is directly involved with daily food safety operations. Working together to identify what hazards affect what products, where hazards may occur, and what to do to prevent them, team members have been trained in food safety procedures and HACCP principles and, under the guidance of SCS, have developed and implemented a powerful Food Safety Management Plan.

Ongoing Commitment
Each function within Melissa's Food Safety Management Plan has its unique procedure to prevent contamination and to limit the growth of microorganisms. And every aspect of the produce chain, from grower to customers, is closely monitored. Our ongoing commitment to implement a Supply Chain Management/Vendor Verification Program will continue to ensure the distribution of products from an environment where clean, safe practices are always in place. HACCP - Third Party Verification
Melissa's has established a comprehensive HACCP-Based Food Safety Management Program to be independently certified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) -- a leader in food safety efforts with an established record of NutriClean/CertiClean authorized retailers and distributors. While recognizing that reducing the risk of food borne illness to zero is impossible, this third-party certification (1) verifies safe and sanitary practices are being maintained and (2) ensures Melissa's products meet or exceed the highest level of food safety standards.

The food safety program Melissa's is pursuing goes well beyond what the National Food Safety Initiative announced by President Clinton in 1997 requires of produce distributors.

At Melissa's, we are committed - with the highest degree of certainty  to ensuring our line of premium fresh product is safe. We believe that the effectiveness of incorporating preventive control, coupled with verification is a powerful tool in further reducing the risk of food contamination.

Within Melissa's Food Safety Management Plan, each function has its unique procedure to prevent contamination and to limit the growth of microorganisms. Every aspect of the produce chain, from grower to customers, is closely monitored. In fact, Melissa's current participation in SCSs NutriClean program offers retailers the assurance that Melissa's Grande variety Jalapeno Chiles, direct from Los Mochis, Mexico is certified to have No-Detected-Pesticide-Residues.
